Richard A. Brezing, MD, FACP is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with more than four decades of experience delivering advanced cardiovascular and thoracic surgical care throughout South Florida. Widely respected for his clinical expertise, leadership, and dedication to patient-centered medicine, Dr. Brezing has played a pivotal role in the development and continuity of cardiothoracic surgical services across Broward County.
Dr. Brezing earned his undergraduate degree in History from Thiel College, graduating with honors, before completing his medical degree at New York Medical College in New York City. He graduated with honors and was awarded the Roggio Award, a distinction recognizing outstanding academic achievement, clinical excellence, and professional promise among graduating medical students. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by advanced cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgical training under Dr. John Hutchinson and at the University of Utah.
He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and has maintained continuous licensure and certification since the early 1980s. Dr. Brezing is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Throughout his career, Dr. Brezing has served as a cardiothoracic staff surgeon at numerous major hospitals, including Holy Cross Hospital, Broward General Hospital, Florida Medical Center, Broward Health Coral Springs Hospital, and multiple university-affiliated medical centers. He has also held long-standing appointments on medical executive committees, reflecting sustained peer confidence in his clinical judgment and leadership. He currently serves as Chief of Surgery at HCA Woodmont Medical Center, where he provides strategic clinical leadership while continuing active surgical practice.
In addition to his clinical and administrative hospital roles, Dr. Brezing has demonstrated exceptional physician leadership in private practice. From 1992 to 2010, he served as President and CEO of South Florida Cardiovascular Surgical Associates, guiding the practice through nearly two decades of growth and clinical excellence. Following its acquisition by Hospital Corporation of America, he continued in practice before founding Parkland Thoracic Surgery Associates, LLC in 2023, where he currently serves as President and CEO.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Brezing enjoys hiking, kayaking, skiing, hunting, fishing, and is an avid football enthusiast. His career reflects a rare combination of surgical excellence, institutional leadership, and enduring commitment to the communities he serves.
